As always, it was a treat to join Terry Edwards’ Near Jazz Experience at the Indo Bar in Whitechapel Road, where pizza-fanciers received an unexpected side-order of trombone poetry. A new poem dedicated to the place was recited – Indode – which will perhaps one day be put in a gilded frame and nailed above the door to the gents’.
Jumoké Fashola’s Jazz Verse Jukebox has now migrated from Soho to Hoxton Hall, a splendid old music hall now looking much more spruce than it did when this trombone last played there in the early 90’s. Jumoké’s stellar trio (Simon Wallace, Oli Hayhurst and Steve Taylor) boosted even the most unlikely material from guests and sitters-in.
On the day of the London Marathon there was a short-notice afternoon gig for Click Beetle at The Gregorian pub in Jamaica Road, where we played tunes like Let’s Try, Don’t Look Back and One for the Road to exhausted cheerleaders and broken athletes.
Those adjectives may be applicable again tonight at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in the House of Commons Terrace Pavilion, where Loose Tubes have again been nominated, this time for Jazz Ensemble Of The Year. Down the hatch!
