It was a pleasure, of course, to spend a couple of days in Hull last month, though the weather wasn’t quite what we ordered. A large helping of snow was none too helpful for a book launch, but we did our best.
Also doing their best at Hull Jazz were two great players making the most of a set of Click Beetle tunes with minimal run-throughs just before the gig. Dan Edwards excelled on guitar and Chris Sykes dazzled on drums.
Chris was luckily available when percussionist and old mate, Gary Hammond, chose, bafflingly, to take a few gigs in Bangladesh rather than battle the blizzards in Hull to play in a pub. With his old mate. Some people.
We were joined in a final set by John Allen on sax and Aaron Green on keyboard, the duo that began the proceedings. The town is lucky to have these two bright young players knocking about on the jazz scene as well.
Some more plotting will be needed to foist another book party on Hull next year to get our book installed in the literary underworld up there.
Maybe when Gary is finally awarded the Key to the City and makes a percussion instrument out of it, we’ll reconvene Hearing Things and bang on again about Hulling.
Londoners will of course be able to stock up on stocking-fillers at this month’s gigs.
