The trombone poetry chronicle has been going for many years, but has become somewhat erratic lately. It’s time for an overhaul.
The main change will be to include news about bands I have been playing in for years, and which have been inspirational for trombone poetry in many ways, such as Roberto Pla’s Latin Ensemble, Snowboy & The Latin Section, Yiddish Twist Orchestra, The Blowpipes Trombone Trio, The Vintage Tea Dance Orchestra and various other bands and projects, especially Click Beetle, for which dozens of original tunes have now been written. There will be more trombone poetry events involving The Blowpipes and Click Beetle, where possible, and other collaborations.
This mailout has always been called the trombone poetry chronicle, but if it is to cover other events and doings, another name had to be found. A new word was coined, by contracting the original name:
Trombonicle: the odd gig, the odd word.
There will no doubt still be reports of demented open-mic shenanigans here and there, but we hope for brighter things too.
The unsettling quiet of January was blown to pieces last week by playing twelve shows at Ronnie Scott’s in the Mingus Big Band, the kind of experience that changes everything.
If I had to name one person who equipped me to deal with that week, I would give thanks to my much-missed friend, Mick Collins, in whose bands I happily toiled to learn how to play big band jazz. That learning is of course never-ending, so I’m glad to say that Mick’s legacy is explored and enjoyed every month with his band’s continuing residency in a Bromley club.
