A double pleasure to be in Bethnal Green Road – nostalgia for years in the East End – and to perform again at the illustrious Klinker. The duo of Dave Draper on transmuting guitar and Bob Peachey on transfixing sax launched the evening, followed by Jeff Hilson, reciting long and lunatic fugue-like poems shipped in from Hither Green.
Static Memories, another duo, offered what might be called gentlectronica, with Dan Powell tweaking a thicket of wired up boxes and Gus Garside on more electronics, doubling on double bass.
The trombone poetry recital presented new poems: a proverbial theme & variations number called A Cat, and the erotic canticle, Hanky Panky. Tunes included the ephemeral Tuna Sandwich and the instantly-forgotten Demise of the Dachshund. Probably.
The invitation to broadcast again on Resonance FM was gladly accepted. An expected fifteen minutes or so on Carole Finer’s Sound Out show turned out to be a whole programme devoted to trombone poetry and its mysterious origins.
This wide-ranging interview, peppered with muted trombone inventions and recent poems, will be aired again on Resonance’s 104.4 FM station in London and is archived, for misguided archivists, online at Mixcloud, but beware the automatic (and unwelcome) booming out of the recording as soon as the page loads.
The gigs listed below are all plainly unmissable opportunities to get a copy of Speech, but do make a date for the combination of trombone poetry and a big band in a working men’s club, and for the spectacular Blowpipes concert in Croydon’s finest pub.
