Trombonicle 75 / art

We’ve reached that time of year when anxiety mounts as you realize that you can’t think of suitable gifts for your nearest and dearest, or even unsuitable ones. This month there will be only a handful of opportunities to show up for an earful of music and insist on a signed copy of some bewildering poetry book, but that’s how it often is. That’s life. There’s always the online shop, of course, but it’s not the same, is it?

A Bigger MOUTH had some airplay on Resonance FM on the The Ambrosia Rasputin Show, thanks to our friend Ivor Kallin, who recorded some quartet improvisations at Hundred Years Gallery on his pocket cassette recorder.

imaginary guitarist2024 got off to a fine Surrealist start, thanks to the Garden Cinema, with a season of Luis Buñuel films, and in October, the Courtauld Institute began an excellent series of talks to mark the 100th anniversary of Surrealism. The effects of all this will reverberate into 2025, with new books already wriggling around in the pipeline.

More Book Parties!

Meanwhile, from another corner of the art world, here’s a November memento from an exhibition of paintings by Joachim Lambrechts, mostly of unrecognizable, yet famous, jazz musicians.

In this badly-taken photograph, for which no apologies are offered, we see something of special interest to guitarists. As in all his other paintings of guitars, the artist balks at showing any strings crossing the frets. But count how many strings there are at the bridge, compared to those heading for the frets before they vanish.

Does Chuck need to have a word with his tailor?

Excellent work.
