Trombonicle 79 / Other – Trombone Poetry

The Blue Planet Orchestra’s gigs at Annie’s Jazz and the 606 Club were a real boost last month, so this month’s gig near Oxford will no doubt be even better: some bands are like that.

Another band that gets better every month is the Mick Collins Legacy Jazz Orchestra, still playing a different programme for each gig at the club in Sundridge Park, near Bromley. This month we have a special guest, Adam Glasser, on keyboard and harmonica.

A band that is developing beyond description is A Bigger MOUTH, whose monthly residency flourishes at the Hundred Years Gallery in Hoxton. This month, after a very long wait, the vinyl LP Band Stand will be available in places like Dash The Henge. The back cover of this beautiful gatefold album displays a poem, Mouthly, hinting at what went into the recording.

Mark Roberts has now joined Lu Edmonds in PIL, so they won’t be with us much during the summer. Be like that then.

A slightly different kind of ensemble gave a wonderful performance at Queen Mary University for the Centre for Catalan Studies: Ses honorables virtuts il·lògiques: ‘El viatge’. Diego Martínez González, clown and musician, and Jèssica Ferrer Escandell, poet and performer, made using of musical saw, toy keyboard, loops and other implements to accompany poetic recitations. A very rum book will be launched this month, containing some poetry but also a story, photos, esoteric research and hundreds of words never seen before in print, all harvested from a remarkable village called Otherhithe.

There will be a very informal Book Party to unleash this pocket paperback, in a congenial Italian cafe (serving wine and beer). Details below. There may even be a trip to a riverside pub for further explorations. See you in Otherhithe.
